Trauma is not what happens to you but what happens inside you
Gabor Maté
Trauma is like a wound that goes deeper than skin—it’s an emotional injury that shakes us to our core. It can be anything from a car accident to abuse, and it leaves a mark that’s not easily erased. Trauma often leads to a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), where the memories of the traumatic event replay like a broken record, haunting our thoughts and dreams.
But here’s the thing about therapy
It’s like a healing balm for those emotional wounds. Therapy for trauma and PTSD can take many forms, but one approach that’s gaining recognition is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). EMDR is like hitting the reset button on your brain—it helps you process traumatic memories in a way that reduces their emotional power. During EMDR, you might recall the traumatic event while also focusing on external stimuli, like moving your eyes or tapping your fingers. It sounds strange, but for many people, it’s a game-changer.
Another powerful tool for healing trauma is parts work, also known as Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy. Trauma can splinter our sense of self into different parts—like the part that feels scared, the part that feels angry, or the part that just wants to forget. Parts work helps you understand and heal those fractured parts of yourself, so you can integrate them into a more cohesive whole.
Therapy for trauma isn’t about erasing the past—it’s about reclaiming your present and shaping your future. It’s about finding the courage to confront those demons and knowing that you don’t have to face them alone. With the right support and guidance, healing is possible, and brighter days lie ahead.
